A Fresh Visual Direction for Non-Traditional Devotionals

Two authors. Two unexpected creative directions. Complete cover and interior designs that move beyond familiar devotional conventions.

The Challenge

A publisher brought me two non-traditional Christian devotional projects. She wanted the books to feel different from conventional devotional publishing. Both authors arrived with their own ideas of what their covers should look like, creating an opportunity to explore visual directions they might not have considered.

The Creative Approach

I developed cover concepts with each book’s voice and intended reader in mind, exploring unexpected directions while respecting the authors’ perspectives. Rather than treating their initial ideas as fixed instructions, the design process gave them room to discover an approach that felt right for the work. I then carried the chosen creative direction through each book’s interior design and prepared digital eBook editions as well.

The Results

Both authors ultimately selected cover artwork they had not originally expected to choose. Each book received a distinctive, cohesive visual treatment from cover through interior, along with its eBook edition. The projects demonstrate how collaborative creative exploration can help clients see possibilities beyond their initial vision.
